Game Crashes and Freezes
A game crash is when the game closes completely, suddenly and unexpectedly. If you see an in-game error message instead, please press F3 while still in the game to send us that report.
A game freeze is happening when the game still active but maybe not reacting to input. Sound may still be playing. Eventually you are getting the Windows dialog asking if you want to wait or terminate the application.
Issues are very frustrating, so we have compiled this list of the most common issues.
Please go through this list and try to verify after each step if the crash/freeze is still happening.
Level 1 recommendations
Always do this first!
- Update your display drivers. Outdated drivers for your graphics card can cause crashes. Most graphic cards come with software (like NVIDIA App or AMD Adrenaline) that let you update your drivers. Please do so.
- Verify the game files. Go to Steam, right-click on Tavern Keeper in your Steam library, then select Properties/Installed Files then click on "Verify integrity of game files". This will double-check that the game is installed correctly.
- Install the latest Windows Updates.
- Close other applications. Other applications can interfere with the game and cause crashes. Close as many other applications as possible. Particularly those injecting game overlays (like Discord or nvidia/AMD app) or applications taking up lots of memory.
- Check minimum hardware requirements. Does your computer match the minimum requirements as published on our Steam page (see the bottom of the Steam page)?
Level 2 recommendations - Change in-game settings
You find most of these inside of Tavern Keeper under Settings > Video
- Turn VSync off
- Change Window Mode to "Fullscreen Window"
- Try lowering the games resolution (try running it at 1920x1080 or even lower to see if it helps).
- Limit the frame rate.
Level 2 recommendations - Disable overlays and system optimisations
- Disable game-overlays.
- Steam: Right-click on Tavern Keeper in your Steam library, go to Properties > General and disable Steam Overlay.
- Discord: Discord > Settings > Game Overlay (at the bottom of the list)
- AMD Software: Performance > Overlay
- Nvidia App: Open Nvidia App > Settings
- Disable Fullscreen Optimisations
- Open Steam - Right click on Tavern Keeper > Manage > Browse local files
- A File Explorer window opens, right-click on Tavern Keeper and choose Properties
- Go to Compatibility and check “Disable full-screen optimisations”
- Disable Windows Game Bar
- Open Windows Settings (Windows Key + I) and select the Gaming category on the left.
- Select Game Mode and turn it off.
- Disable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
- Press the Windows + I keyboard shortcut to open Settings.
- Select System > Display > Graphics settings. Then switch the button under Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling to Off.
- Restart your computer to let this change take effect
- Unplug external devices other than the mouse/keyboard.
- Confirm you have free space on your hard drive.
- Laptop users: ensure the game runs on your dedicated GPU rather than your integrated graphics card through your GPU control panel.
- Check minimum hardware requirements. Does your computer match the minimum requirements as published on our Steam page (see the bottom of the Steam page)?
Please make sure you have gone through all of the steps above before continuing!
Level 3 recommendations
If the the crash still happens, please do the following
- If the game crashes at the exact same game moment, please send us an F3 report just before the moment that triggers the crash and try to describe with as much detail as possible how to force the crash.
Level 4 recommendations
- If the game crashes when loading a save file please send us your save files and player profiles. They are located here:
%HOMEPATH%\AppData\LocalLow\Greenheart Games\Tavern Keeper\main\ (you can paste this address into the address bar of your File Explorer)
Please compress the 'profiles' directory and send them to support@greenheartgames.com
Level 4 recommendations
If you can't run the game at all or you are experiencing seemingly random crashes you can send us your log files and we can try to investigate further.
Ideally you send us to these files straight after a crash.
How to find your log files
They are located in this folder (you can paste this address into the address bar of your File Explorer)
%HOMEPATH%\AppData\LocalLow\Greenheart Games\Tavern Keeper (you can paste this address into the address bar of your File Explorer)
In there you should see two files - Player.log and Player-prev.log
Please compress both files and send these files to support@greenheartgames.com
